“Black Woman To Be Uncovered” is an old image I’ve shot at The Wallace Collection in London at a moment when some works were re-arranged. It turned up in my memory when the Black Lives Matter movement emerged. I believe in the principle that All Lives Matter but I also acknowledge the need to emphasize all the groups, genders, minorities and marginalised people who belong to today’s damned of the earth – covered, invisibilised, blurred. This woman’s facial expression is enigmatic, staring yet resigned. And judging by her haircut and dress, she may be an upper-class woman? Or a contemporary Veiled Virgin?
